he is afraid of the walking deadYeah, mostly, after they escape every now and then, just to pass a few hours (I'm honestly surprised the episode didn't end with them staying up all night defending the house). "The Dog" picks up right where "So Close, Yet So Far Away" left off: Travis, Liza, Chris and the Salazars hide out in a barbershop while Madison, Nick and Alicia patiently wait at home for Travis to return.

But this night is particularly dark and full of terror, forcing the two separated groups to fend for themselves before they are reunited in relative harmony. The most immediate danger comes with Travis' troupe.

They're locked in the street, inches apart, and a riot is raging, but Travis continues to try to placate the group with platitudes that will surprise them if they believe them. It deals with the fact that the cops will take care of everything and they can ride out the storm without worrying about a robbery - what are they trying to steal from the barber shop?

Of course, the store is also home to Salazar, which Daniel Salazar believes has the biggest stakes. However, the value of the store becomes moot when Chris notices that the walls are heating up. With robbers surrounding them and a fire that could threaten the safety of their chosen hideout, they decide to escape together. Travis' truck was nearby and the two families formed a circle, ready to take their time when the door opened.

However, as soon as the door opens, the robbers run out and start destroying the place. They were not there to steal but to cause general anarchy, enveloped by the screams of overturned cars, bodies and broken windows as they left the scene. Walkers are already attacking and biting police officers and pedestrians as civil unrest presents two unique challenges to law enforcement - citizens who are alive and citizens who are dead but still walking.

The two families made their way through the noisy crowd and through the building that looked like itWorthlessFixed shape. Almost all escaped unharmed, despite police firing high-powered water cannons into the crowd. But Griselda, matriarch of the Salazar family, was crushed by the falling barricade, breaking her leg. The trapped family returned to rescue her, Travis carrying her and the rest of the family packed into his suspiciously intact and undamaged truck.

The group fled and left the scene and returned to Madison's house, but that seems to have been the only good thing in the situation. Griselda's leg was badly bruised and Daniel told Travis that everyone was coming home so he could call his family to pick them up. Why don't you go to the hospital, you ask? Well, the only hospital they passed on the way home was already full of police and the doctors, nurses and patients had fled the scene. Chaos reigned in the hospital, and returning patients had to be left in the parking lot. This scene, from the perspective of Travis' car, is very similar to the beginningthe last survivor, while comparing the series to one of the greatest stories ever told in gaming, doesn't do the series' early episodes any favors.

Moments later, an even louder gunshot is heard as they drive down the freeway, the lights of Los Angeles go out and every single power grid falls like a rag quilt until the entire land in front of them is shrouded in darkness.

The power outage affected everyone, including Madison and the children. Although she tried to keep them in the Monopoly game, Alicia was overcome by the noise she heard outside.

However, when the power is turned off, the true nature of the situation is seen. Danger, while not as omnipresent as Travis and his family, could be just a few steps away. Nick doesn't like to wait for someone who has already found a family, but Madison doesn't lose hope for his return.

NEXT: Who's Knocking at the Back Door?

When they hear the sound of the back door, the burden of waiting is temporarily forgotten. Alicia still doesn't know what the truth is waiting for her, but luckily, they discover it's just a dog scratching at the glass door. They let him in, only to find that his fur was covered in blood - thankfully not the dog's.

Although the dog may have been a false alarm, the real horror awaited them at the front door. A dog's bark alerted them that a walker had come up the path to the source of the noise, and the family, understandably less well-dressed than Rick and his crew, fled in panic. Here's wherehe is afraid of the walking deadit showswalking DeadOne walker is enough to drive a character insane, and Rick, Darryl and the others can take down an enemy with minimal effort.

But in the days after the walker's appearance, the family is reluctant to chase down a man who is both familiar and a complete stranger, so Nick leads them to a neighbor's house, where he knows he has a gun. The three jumped over the yard fence and entered the neighbor's yard through the garden maze.

When they broke in, Nick began rummaging around the house for weapons, while Alicia stepped out of the crowd to look around the house. The power went on and off, and by the time they found shotguns and grenades to use, it seemed too late to save everyone. Alicia noticed the little boy - she still didn't understand his nature - enter their house, and just as he was hiding, she heard the dog growling at him. But the barking and growling turned into cries of pain. To make matters worse, Travis returned home not knowing what was waiting for him at home.

Madison and others rushed to save him, but he went inside to find his neighbor biting the dog on the carpet. Travis foolishly tries to bring down his neighbor, to connect with him on a human level, but his well-intentioned efforts only get him into trouble. He and his dead friend start arguing until Madison arrives with a gun.

However, Travis still didn't want to kill him. He believed he could convince his friend Peter. He must be sick (and craving meat), but Daniel doesn't want him. He blows off half of Peter's face and when that doesn't stop him completely, he puts the gun to Peter's face to make sure the shot is clean. Brains and blood splattered the curtains and Chris ran outside to throw up.

It's a good thing he ran into the yard. He finds Alicia fighting a walker, restrained by a fence. At Nick's urging, he runs back to the other house to get more shotgun holsters, where he sees what could be another walker's leg. But here she comes face to face with the man and for the first time fully grasps the reality of the situation. Chris takes it out on a woman, who turns out to be their neighbor Susan, who in turn elbows him in the nose, bringing Travis' old and new families into conflict again.

In case Alicia wasn't getting the hint, Nick explained the neighbor's situation to her and everyone else. "She's not sick. She's dead." Alicia is worried about Matt's condition and the statement brings her to tears, while Travis is outraged that Nick was so honest.

So the three makeshift families packed up for the night. Travis tends to Chris, who is concerned about the state of his face, while the Salazars prepare Griselda's bed for the night. Ofelia knew something was being kept from her, because her father had told her that the whole family was buried in El Salvador, but she told everyone that her cousin would pick her up tomorrow morning. Ophelia would rather stay with Travis and Madison.

Next: Is there hope for life?

Luckily for her, Madison wanted to leave that night, fearing new danger, but Travis convinced her to spend the night at home. She agrees, but only if he cleans up the mess from Peter's body, which he buries in the yard.

Not that tonight will be easy. Lisa was worried about Griselda, whose leg was badly injured and the cells in it were dying. If they die, there's nothing stopping her from dying and turning into a creature similar to the one that attacked Travis. Lisa also deals with Madison, trying to appeal to her motherhood, suggesting that they work together for the sake of the child. However, Madison wanted more from her. She wants Lisa to kill her when she becomes one of them so Travis never has to. It's a lot to ask of someone, but his reasons for doing so become clear in the morning — Travis still doesn't have the power to kill these things, let alone the body of someone he loves.

The morning began quietly, although tensions began to surface almost immediately. Daniel decides to teach Chris how to use a shotgun, and Travis is upset about something he doesn't know. Madison has one more thing to do before Travis' old and new families leave.

He came out to face Susan, hammer in hand to end the pain. But Travis came to stop her again. Madison seems convinced it's the right thing to do, but Travis implies that they don't know everything and that he can't do it even if Susan and everyone else infected has a glimmer of hope. While Madison seems willing, Daniel sees it as an act of weakness and hands Travis the hammer and leaves.

While we as viewers can somehow know the future of society, these characters do not. So it's understandable that, despite Travis' depressed demeanor, it's understandable at this point that someone feels that way and wants to keep hope alive.

Travis' sense of hope is only strengthened at the end of the episode. As the two families leave, Madison returns to see Susan's husband, Patrick, returning to their home. He knew he had to warn him, so he chased Patrick into his backyard, where he was nearly bitten by his wife's shell. But the shot hit Susan's body and the army rushed into the courtyard. When Patrick was arrested, they pulled all the civilians because he was too accessible to Susan.

The military obviously didn't know what was going on, they weren't sure how the cause of the outbreak had spread, so they asked the families of Travis and Madison a series of questions. They wanted to know if anyone else had contact with any of these creatures and they wanted a list of everyone still alive in the house. (Nick is also checking a series of locked windows to open them when he comes upon a little girl watching him from a nearby window. She seems happy, surprisingly content, perhaps just because of the horrors they've been through to see another alive.)

Travis named them all and Madison lied that she was never exposed. Oh, and that hill in their yard is their lost dog, no need to explain how he died. But the presence of the army reassured Travis, who hoped that things would improve when the cavalry arrived. Regardless of whether the house is clearly marked, there is now a healthy military presence nearby. However, while this comforts Travis, it worries Daniel, who says it's too late.

Is it too late for them or their company? It's a question we may know the answer to, but we're just beginning to discover it.
