"Don't you guys ever talk about bloody axes and fingerprints and serial killers?" I asked, disappointed.
"Someone once passed out while I was doing a reading," Herron said. "Oh no, that happened twice." To faint. "Or maybe he was sleeping?" However, no one had died.
Hilary put down her fork. "People say that, but it's true. Crime writers put all their cruelty aside. Personally, they're the nicest people."
"Of course you want to exhaust the interior." Caricatura de Zachary Kanin copied link
"They are the love writers to watch out for," Herron said. "Blood on the rug, these people."
After dinner I followed them down a dark cobbled alley to Burgage Hall, a crowded room, full of noise and gossip and smelling of woodsmoke and wet wool. Stacks of books were stacked on folding tables where wine and juice were served in plastic cups. A pulpit had been pushed into a corner. The old men unbuttoned their coats and took off their caps; the old women sat on the seats. You could hear the clatter of dirty boots and the click of knitting needles. "Secrets and Spies" was the theme of the night. It could have been a garden club meeting.
In the morning Howard took a walk to the Malvern Hills, and Herron and I took a train to Oxford. We sat across from each other at a laminate table and watched the rain through the windows as we crossed the soggy landscape. "See, Say, Classified" read the signs above each door, flashing green pixels.
In the age of terror, everyone is on alert, on trains, buses and planes, not just under surveillance, but under surveillance.if you see something let me know🇧🇷 Lamb complains, "It's like the whole world is a fucking spy."
I had heard each of Herron's novels on audio, played by wonderfully versatile actors with AirPods in my ears. I felt like a secret agent listening. (Julia Franklin, who recorded the Oxford series, and Gerard Doyle and Seán Barrett, who recorded the Jackson Lamb books, told me they had to stop reading to laugh.) Reading or listening to Herron is like riding a merry-go-round and switching gears. animal every day. response time You're on one person's head, and then you're on someone else's head, except, disturbingly, you're almost never on Lamb's head. It is a cipher, hidden forever.
Herron absently watched all the passing passengers trotting past us on the train, drenched down the aisle, as if he were placing them in a catalog of humanity. Their slow horses come in all types, and they've been put out of commission for every mistake they might make. River Cartwright failed a training exercise. Min Harper left a floppy disk labeled "Top Secret" on a train. Louisa Guy lost an arms dealer she was chasing. Marcus Longridge, who is black, is a gambler; and the sexually ambiguous Shirley Dander (don't ask her), is a coke addict. Roderick Ho, a geek played by Christopher Chung on the Apple series, was sent to Slough House for being an idiot.
Ho is a writer of sorts, an inventor of fictional worlds; he is amazed that he can "build a man out of links and screenshots, drop him out into the world like a paper boat, and keep sailing." Herron loves Ho, the spy writer, lost in a world of his own invention. "There might come a point where I have to let it grow a bit," he conceded, "but then I'd probably have to kill it."
The office jokes are brutal: "While Louisa Guy has been known to speculate that Ho falls on the autism spectrum, Min Harper routinely replies that he is also off the git index." and Dander warns him that he's using hate speech, Longridge says, "Of course it's hate speech. I hate it."
“Readers have assumed I'm waging a war on political correctness,” Herron said, clearly irritated. "I'm not. I'm all for being decent to each other. I don't think Lamb is fighting this war either." Lamm plays with words and pisses:
I'll let someone else do the digging. He looked at Marcus. "Just one sentence. Let's not call the Thought Police."
"we need agossipTeam,” murmured Marcus.

Lamb also tries to get people working for him to stop, fearing they will be killed. Most of what he does, he does to save her. When a bad actor sneaks into Molly Doran's file department and she tells him to leave and he says "don't take orders from a madman", Lamb finds the guy, breaks both his legs and asks, "Who's the guy?" Is he crazy?" ? ?"
Herron's phone rang. It was Howard who called to make sure we got on the train and asked Herron if he could pick up a pair of slippers she had left at home.
"Yes, yes," Herron said. "Goodbye dear." And to me: "It's too wet to go for a walk. He went shopping. We watched the pouring rain.
Herron also loves to write about Catherine Standish, for whom he provided the most comprehensive backstory: a drunken and confused past fatally linked to Lamb's darker exploits. "She knows more than anyone what could have happened in her life," Herron said. "I have this feeling about my own life."
In 2017, after the books started to grow, Herron quit his job. Not long after, he attended a sales and marketing meeting at John Murray's. The name of the series was changed from Slough House Mysteries to Jackson Lamb Thrillers. They showed him everything from posters, advertisements and merchandise to coasters printed with lambismos: "When am I not filled with the joy of living??”
"Do you know," Herron said slowly to the executives, "that in the book I'm writing I'm going to kill him?"
Be silent. restless More silence. "You want to turn us on, yes?"
The train sped along the flooded tracks and stopped in Charlbury, a bustling town on the edge of the Cotswolds, about twenty minutes from Oxford. A few passengers boarded, umbrellas following them like lines. The doors closed. The train stopped like a stone, the rain fell and the wind shook. Finally, the conductor said something over the loudspeaker system that no one could make out over the noise, leaving everyone as confused as lazy horses trapped in a subway. "Signaling trouble," reflects a character in the third Slough House book. "These were often caused by heat, if not cold, or things that were wet or dry."
People started gossiping, complaining, texting. After ten minutes, the driver's voice came back, now shouting, to announce that the brakes were stuck and would take at least an hour to release. Brexit budget cuts?
Herron and I got off the train and into the rain. The quarter station was closed. There were no buses into town or anywhere else. No Ubers, no Lyfts. No taxi stand. We huddled in raincoats under the station's suspended roof with half a dozen other stranded passengers, including a rosy-cheeked young man and his father, who wore long wool coats. They had traveled from Worcestershire and the son, who couldn't have been more than twenty, was on his way to London for an interview, his first.
"You'll make it," Herron assured him. "What's the job?"
"Fund Accounting".
"Oh, right. Don't worry. It's not far. You'll be fine."
The candidate nodded gratefully. Everyone tried to call taxi companies using cell phones as street lights. Nobody answered. The rain picked up and then the wind. It suddenly got very cold. We were late, we were soaking wet, and now we were freezing.
'When we get to Oxford,' Herron told me, 'I'll have you robbed. Then the food poisoning starts around four.
Finally, a taxi pulled up. Two women in fur coats and high boots dried off the train and boarded. Herron and the aspiring fund accountant's father stormed out into the rain and asked them to pick up another passenger. The son squeezed into the backseat. Herron knocked on the car window. "Good luck," he said. "You will be great."
Trembling, he ran under the roof of the station.
Moscow rules: keep an eye out. London rules: cover your ass. Slough House Rules: Everywhere is Joe Country. Herron rubbed his hands together to keep warm and tried to wipe the raindrops off his glasses. My notebook was soaked. I asked him why he avoids writing from Jackson Lamb's head and he said, "Because I don't want to break it." The rain fell like a veil.♦
